November 14, 2017 — The Weapons of Worship & The Word – Pr. Noleen Mendes

For the Lord takes delight in his people;
he crowns the humble with victory.
5 Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor
and sing for joy on their beds.
6 May the praise of God be in their mouths
and a double-edged sword in their hands,
7 to inflict vengeance on the nations
and punishment on the peoples,
8 to bind their kings with fetters,
their nobles with shackles of iron,
9 to carry out the sentence written against them—
this is the glory of all his faithful people.
Praise the Lord.

Psalm 149:5-9

Here is a blatant statement of the power of Worship and The Word! When God’s faithful ones lean into him by praising Him and meditating on the Scriptures, they are empowered to victory in any battle.

Both Worship and the Word were created by God for one reason: to turn our thoughts away from the world and set them on Christ. When we do this, our thoughts have no room to entertain worldly strategies of how to overcome the battle at hand. We are filled up with godliness and, freed up to hear from the Holy Spirit and move accordingly. It reminds me of this old hymn:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face.
Then the things of the earth
Will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.

Walking alongside my son in his current situation has been both painful and joyful. Painful because he’s walking a road he never chose to venture on. He goes in and out of depressed moments, missing his kids terribly. But it is joyful to watch him lean into God during this really difficult time. He’s beginning to understand that worshipping God daily and reading and meditating on His Word is the only way to restore peace and joy in his heart. He is able to ward off the enemy by setting his mind on Jesus as he’s worshiping and reading the Scriptures. It hasn’t been easy but he’s come to understand that Jesus ia the only way for him to endure this time.

Father God, You were so good to provide a way for us to stay focused on You. Thank you for giving us Worship and Your Word to strengthen and empower us to victory. Draw me close to You in praise and meditation when I am wandering off course. In Jesus Name…Amen!
