November 21, 2017 – The Jesus Way – Pr. Noleen Mendes
17 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved.” – Matthew 9:17
What a teachable moment! Jesus used 3 analogies to get his point across that we need to be cautious at overwhelming “newcomers of the faith.” Jesus came to bring a new way and he was teaching his disciples this new way. There’s nothing wrong with the old way except if it keeps a person in bondage to it.
One of the greatest gifts I had been given as a Christ follower is that the Word of God was never forced down my throat. As I constantly and consistently grew in my faith, since being a baby Chris-follower, there was never any stress or pressure to conform to the “rules” of being a Christian. On the contrary, there were no rules!! I was taught “The Jesus Way”, that I had the freedom of choice. It was through this form of learning that I was able to grasp the love of Christ and His teachings, which filled me up and stretched me out, fermenting the old and making way for the new creation God was creating in me. Although I’m still a work in progress, I’m grateful for this path I had been on for over 30 years. Now the challenge for me is to teach in the same way I was taught, not with religion or rules but with the love and freedom that can only be found in Jesus.
Holy Spirit, please guide me in how to be a teacher of “The Jesus Way” by my words and actions. Show me how to come alongside those who are growing in The Word and learning the ways of Christ. Remind me of the love and grace poured out to me from my own mentors, that I may also mentor with a listening ear and encouraging words. In Jesus Name…Amen!
