2/28/2018 – Passing The Baton of Leadership – Pr. Sonny Shimaoka

“Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the Lord instructed through Moses.” (Numbers 27:22-23 (NIV)

Passing the mantle of leadership is critical for the local church. I noticed several criteria that is essential in a “biblical” leader. First and foremost I noticed that Moses asked God to appoint his successor. Someone who could not only lead them into battle but also could direct the internal affairs of the Israelites. Someone with a “shepherds” heart! Next it was essential that the leader has the spirit of leadership on him (vs. 18). The third essential is that Moses gave him some of his authority. I take that to mean that he gave Joshua some leadership responsibility to help him gain the confidence of the people. The last thing is the passing of the “baton of leadership.” Moses clearly displayed God’s choice commissioning Joshua in front of the whole community.

I see a pattern that Moses sets for us as we prepare, develop and release new leaders in the church. Leaders must be God appointed! It is essential to seek His direction and guidance. Leaders need to have a shepherd’s heart. I believe that they must be goal oriented and care deeply for the people they lead. Last but not least is the fact that you and I cannot lead effectively and powerfully without the Spirit of God directing our actions. Joshua had the “Spirit of leadership” on and in him. I/we cannot do anything without Him.

Father, thank you for examples in Your Word that gives us clear guidelines to follow when identifying, developing and releasing leaders/shepherds in New Hope Waikoloa. Holy Spirit, I look to You for continued guidance and insight to help others emerge as confident, biblical leaders in our church community. In Jesus Name….
