1/31/2018 – Over The Heart Decisions – Pr. Sonny Shimaoka
Whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he will bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastplate of decision as a continuing memorial before the Lord. Also put the Urim and Thummin in the breastpiece, so they may be over Aaron’s heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord. Thus Aaron will always bear the means of making decisions for the Israelites over his heart before the Lord. – Exodus 28:29-30 (NIV)
The high priest had a pair of dice called the “Urim” and the “Thummin” (Curses and Perfections). They used them as a way of determining God’s will in making decisions that affected the whole nation of Israel. It’s important to note that they were placed over the high priests’ heart. Three times in these verses God instructs that the names of the tribes, the Urim and Thummin, and the means of decisions be placed over the heart. It’s interesting to note that the Holy Spirit “circumcises” our hearts according to the scriptures, not our minds!
Making decisions can be hard at times. We all make them every day of our lives. I remember times in my life when I’ve had to make a decision between two choices. The problem? I like both of them! It’s a lot easier when you clearly prefer one over the other. But what usually happens is the one you don’t like seems to be the one that God wants for you! The application for me is that decisions that I make that affect my family, my church family, and my community must always be decisions of the heart. Aaron had to bear it over his heart continually. To me it means that I must always choose to make decisions that evolve from my heart but with the help of the Holy Spirit, guiding me. This is key!
Holy Spirit thank you for leading me throughout the years in making decisions that evolve from my heart and teaching me to trust You in the process. In Jesus Name…
