December 12, 2017 – More Like Jesus, Less Like Me – Pr. Noleen Mendes

For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.—Hebrews 6:10-12

As Christ followers, we are called to love and care for the family of God. God’s reward is just the icing on the cake. The true gift is that by walking our talk in this way, we remain spiritually sharpened and sincerely concerned for those with whom we serve alongside. Spiritual matters should always be our life’s number one priority.

Matthew 6:33 (NLT) says to “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” I don’t always live perfectly by this passage but I do know that when I do, it never fails me. Not only has God blessed and rewarded me tangibly, but the Holy Spirit also rewards me by teaching me things I need to learn. Like, for instance, loving my enemies. That’s a tough one but we are commanded to do it. It doesn’t come easy nor naturally but the more I surrender to God, the more God changes my heart to love.

As a Christ-follower, my desire has always been to be more like Jesus and less like myself. I have found that the best way to do this is one situation at a time, praying myself through and leaning into the Word for direction; to truly walk in the way of humility as Jesus did. When I am able to live righteously by humbling myself in any circumstance, I know full well that God is not unjust, He is forever faithful, and He will rain down His blessings upon me in every way possible.

Father God, as I think about today’s Scripture and devotional, this song come to me: Make me like you, please make me like you, You are the potter make me one too. Lord I am willing, do what you must do, To make me like you Lord, please make me like you. This is my heart’s prayer, Lord. May I be like you in any and every situation I encounter. In Jesus Name…Amen
