September 30, 2017 – Mercy + Kindness = The Heart of God – Pr. Jerri Dizol

Then this message came to Zechariah from the Lord. This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: judge fairly and show mercy, and kindness to one another. – Zechariah 7:8-9

It’s not easy for one to show mercy and kindness to another when they come against you. However, this command must be important to the Lord or He wouldn’t have said it, AND exemplified it for us over and over again. Our lives must be completely transformed in order for us to extend mercy and kindness to others, especially when we think they don’t deserve it.

I recently witnessed a co-worker who treated another co-worker very badly. And from my point of view, there was no reason for that kind of behavior. The one who was being treated badly was a good and hard worker, always showed up for work on time, and performed his duties really well. He was polite and courteous to everyone, and was always ready to help others when asked. After some time, it became very evident that this treatment was totally uncalled for and was becoming worse each time. This made me really sad, to the point of it bringing tears to my eyes. I encouraged that co-worker/friend by telling him that his hard work isn’t un-noticed by me and that he shouldn’t take the mistreatment personally. I prayed and asked God to cover his ears from the verbal abuse and to protect him from it.

This is a great reminder for me in the importance of always treating others with great kindness and mercy. I think to judge fairly means that we must first remember who the real judge is, and second, to remember the golden rule: “Treat others the way that you want to be treated”. God extends mercy to us when we do not deserve it. He extends kindness to us when we don’t deserve it. We should follow suit and do the same.

Father, thank you for Your mercies are new each day. I pray that I will always be mindful of how I treat others and to remember the grace and mercy You extend to me daily. I pray for my friend and his family, that he will know how much You love him. In Jesus Name, Amen
