March 14, 2018 – God Shaped Stones – Pr. Sonny Shimaoka

Scripture:
“And there you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, and altar of stones; you shall not use an iron tool on them. You shall build with whole stones the altar of the Lord your God, and offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God.” – Deuteronomy 27:5-6 (NKJV)

Observation:
Why did the Lord command Moses and the elders to not use any tools on the stones? After all it’s an altar to the honor Him. Why not “shape” it so that it looks beautiful and symmetric. I believe for the simple reason that it not be man-made or a better description would be “man-shaped!” I think mankind has a tendency to build altars, not to honor God but to honor our ability to create sacred cows. We say it’s for God but it usually ends up as a testimony to our great genius.

I think that’s why one of the commandments instructs us to not create any graven image or idols.

Application:
The application is obvious. Everything that I do in the Name of the Lord has to be “God-shaped!” The whole stones represent what God has put together and not what man can tend to fashion together. The altar of uncut stones were to remind the people of Israel and me that God gets all the credit. I get to see how faithful He is!

Prayer:
Holy Spirit help me to not settle for anything less than a “God-shaped” life. Thank You Heavenly Father for using “whole stones” to remind me that my life is all about Jesus.
