January 10, 2018 – Esau, the Drama Queen – Pr. Sonny Shimaoka
“Look, I am about to die, Esau said. What good is the birthright to me…So Esau despised his birthright.” – Genesis 25:32&34 (NIV)
The birthright in this culture was like your identity. It was the privilege given to the firstborn son. It included a double portion of the inheritance along with becoming the recognized leader of the family. Looks like to me that Esau despised his identity which plays itself out if you look at his history. He did everything he could to separate himself from his family.
I learned that you should never go shopping when you are hungry. It tends to alter your decision making on the food you buy. You see this in Esau’s “drama queen” exaggeration that he was going to die if he didn’t get something to eat. Esau’s problem? He gave up his birthright for a short lived appetite!
It’s obvious to me that unlike Esau I must never act on impulse. I must not allow myself to fall into the same trap. I can also tend to exaggerate my “hunger” and make the same statement that Esau made, “I am about to die!” I have avoided making the same mistake by taking the time to compare the short-term satisfaction with its long-range consequences before I make a move. I must remember that I cannot allow the pressures of life distort my perspective and make “in the moment” decisions. Temptation is a fact of life. James 4 verse 7 says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Sounds like good advice to me.
Heavenly Father I am so grateful to be numbered as one of yours. I am so thankful to be identified with Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Holy Spirit help me to remember who I am and Who I belong to, so that I stay focused on making Godly decisions when tempted by the enemy…In Jesus Name!
