October 17, 2017 – Entrusted To Lead – Pr. Noleen Mendes
So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them. – Acts 6:2-3
It’s important here to recognize that there is specific criteria for all ministry leaders. Just as the ministry of the apostles is vital to the spreading of the Gospel, the ministry of these 7 is vital to the Jewish community as they’re distributing food. These servant-leaders must be filled with wisdom to run this ministry efficiently and also be filled with the Holy Spirit to care tenderly for those whom they would be serving.
It seems as though the 7 were chosen rather quickly. I believe it was because these men already exemplified wise and Spirit-filled living. Senior leaders will know which persons can be trusted in various leadership roles based on their day-to-day life. Are they truly following Christ by their actions and speech and being led by the Holy Spirit in decision-making?
When I started attending Horizon Community Church in April of 2016, I was asked to join a Women’s Life Group by one of the women of that group. Right before the Fall 2016 session began, I was asked to lead the group by its leader and she would step into the co-leading role. Within a short 6 months, I was entrusted to this position due to my walk with the Lord.
Just around the same time, the Pastor asked if I would become a “Campus Champion”. Although I didn’t understand what it was (and he didn’t know at that time what it would look like), I accepted. He said he chose me because he felt, just by watching me, that I could be a valuable part of the team.
As Chr st-followers, we live in a fish bowl and the beauty of it, is that it’s an opportunity for others to see that we can be trusted with God’s work. Being chosen to leadership is a great privilege and responsibility,a role where I definitely need the Holy Spirit’s leading and guidance and the wisdom of God to help me to lead well.
Father God, thank you for entrusting me to the people You have put under my care over the years. What an honor to be chosen! I pray, Holy Spirit, continue to fill me up to overflowing that I may pour into those who need encouragement andt the tangible love of Christ. In Jesus Name…Amen!
