January 2, 2018 – KNOW GOD’ S WORD! – Pr. Noleen Mendes

3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” – Genesis 3:1

Some things never change! Satan continues to pose that same question today as he did in the garden: “Did God really say…?” And some of us, just like Eve, begin to ponder: “Wellll….hmm….maaaybeee…” and before we know it, we’re caught up in a whirlwind of contemplation instead of taking our thought captive and making it obedient to Christ.

God only knows how many times I’ve got caught in the midst of this question…or something similar. Satan is no dummy! He knows full well how he could possibly entrap me. Although he may not have known much about Eve, he’s an enemy of God. Therefore, his ploy is always to get Christ-followers to a place of doubting God. He’s not worried about non-Christ followers. They’re already sold out to his ways, even if they don’t know they are. Although I will never be free from sin or temptation, the single most important way to ward it off is for me to:

Consider the question: “Did God really say?” If I know the Word of God, then I’ll know what God did, in fact, really say! Satan himself knows God’s Word so I need to be on top of it at all times, both in reading AND meditating on Scripture, hiding it in my heart so I won’t sin against God. (Psalm 119:11)

Bakers Evangelical Dictionary says:
To know God is not to know about him in an abstract and impersonal manner, but rather to enter into his saving actions. It is not to struggle philosophically with his eternal essence, but rather to recognize and accept his claims. It is not some mystical contemplation, but dutiful obedience.

Coming to the realization that knowing God is to trust Him at His Word has been freeing and brings peace. If I walk in obedience to His Word, I will not get caught up in the whirlwind of contemplating “should I or shouldn’t I?” I already know. If I get caught up in that whirlwind, it’s not because I didn’t “know” but it’s because I did.

Father God, thank you that Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. It gives clear direction for which there’s no way to falter. Forgive me for when I have faltered, when I allowed my own desires to drag me away into sin. Holy Spirit, thank you for being an awesome teacher, bringing conviction when I needed it to help turn me in the right direction. In Jesus Name…Amen!!
