December 6, 2017 – Gains and Losses – Pr. Sonny Shimaoka
“But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ…” – Philippians 3:7-8 (NIV)
What were the gains that now the apostle considered as losses? Paul was considered a “rising star” in the religious system. The gains that I think he was referring to was his credentials as the top Pharisee of his time, his long list of degrees in Judaism, and his many accomplishments in his field. He knew how to play the game and win all the time. As far as the ladder of success goes, he discovered that he had his ladder on the wrong wall. He now considered that “knowing” Christ as Lord and Savior far surpassed all other knowledge. He went as far to say that all his accomplishments, all his notoriety and all his values could not compare with his relationship with Jesus!
To know Jesus is the ultimate goal of every believer. It continues to be my one goal in life. In order for my knowledge of Him to grow I must, like Paul, consider everything a loss for the sake of Christ. That means my thinking has to conform to the way He thinks and my lifestyle has to mirror His. There is a constant “refining” process that I must be willing to endure and accept. I’m discovering that the more I consider worldly gains as loss the more my knowledge of Jesus and His ways grows. How I schedule my time on a daily basis in order to accommodate the Lord is an example. My plans, goals, and desires must conform to His plans, His goals, His desires for my life. Like the apostle, nothing in the world can compare to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ as Lord. Nothing!!!
Heavenly Father, my prayer is that I may know You and Your ways all the days of my life. Holy Spirit, thank You for leading me and revealing Your Truth to me through Your Word. Thank You Jesus for the template that You have set in place for me to follow. In Jesus Name….
