November 29, 2017 – In All Circumstances – Pastor Sonny Shimaoka

Scripture:
“Rejoice always.” “Pray continually.” “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV)

Observation:
There are a couple of things worth mentioning in these three verses. Each command is captured one verse at a time. The phrase “in all circumstances’ refers to each command. In all circumstances rejoice, pray and give thanks. And finally, these are all commands. They are not options! The apostle Paul spells it out very clearly. Knowing God’s will for my life begins with doing these three actions. By the way, they are not easy to do. They often go against my natural inclination to do the opposite.

Application:
Over the years I have discovered that when I made a conscious decision to do what God says, eventually I began to see God work in ways that I would never have imagined. I learned that although the circumstances wouldn’t change, my perspective changed. Eventually I changed. Another important truth learned, is that no matter how things turned out, I was confident in that I at least was doing His will by choosing to be joyful, praying (keeping the lines of communication open) and giving thanks not for the circumstance but that He was with me in it. Probably the greatest lesson learned is that “in all circumstances” He’s there with me!

Prayer:
Holy Spirit help me to remember that doing Your will always precedes getting answers to prayer. Remind me that the answers always are Your answers and not my answers. Thank you heavenly Father that I am usually pleasantly surprised at Your answers. In Jesus Name!
