4 The wife does not have [exclusive] authority over her own body, but the husband shares with her; and likewise the husband does not have [exclusive] authority over his body, but the wife shares with him—1 Corinthians 7:4 (AMP)
The Word of God truly guides us in every aspect of life. This one scripture displays the beauty of the marriage relationship in such profound way. One bible commentary best describes this verse: We here are reminded of the valuable principle that in everything connected with the duties of married life, each should consult the comfort, well-being, and happiness of the other before their own. This is not something that we can “push” ourselves to do every day off of our own will and way. We truly need to be led and empowered by the Spirit of God to accomplish this. Jesus is the Word (see John 1:14) so if we say we love Him then we must love His Word. To do as His Word asks of us is to love Him, our Jesus.
I see the regular struggles in marriages all the time. As a wife, I know that satan hates marriage, especially, Christian ones. The all-out assault against marriage is real. But truly, our focus must be the Truth of His Word. It saddens me that many of us can do what is right in serving each other as brothers and sisters in our churches but not giving room for this same service of grace in our marriages. One of my favorite verses is from Philippians 2: 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. This one verse helps me with perspective every day. I pray that our marriages in our church would reflect this verse.
Jesus, you are my all in all. I pray that as a body of believers, New Hope Waikoloa, would understand and live this verse. I pray that we would look to the comfort, well-being, and happiness of our spouse before our own empowered by Holy Spirit to fulfill this. I pray that we would remember the awesome price you paid for our lives and desire to live the truth & fullness of Your Word each day for You are Worthy of our all.
